Hot in Summer, Cold in Winter?

Loft Conversion Temperature Problems Explained

Loft & attic conversions are perfect for adding extra living spaces for your families enjoyment.  There are many things to factor in but temperature control is one of the most important.

LET'S LOOK AT THE BACKGROUND

Why Loft Conversions Get too Hot or Too Cold

Because the loft conversion room sits directly beneath the roof, it makes them susceptible to temperature extremes.  In the Summer it absorbs more solar heat and in the Winter it loses warmth quicker.

In the past, loft conversions had an awful reputation for being too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Recently, building regulations regarding the amount of insulation that is required has been increased many times. As a result of this regulation, many new products have become available.

This enables us to insulate every loft conversion to a very high standard. With the exception of new build properties, a new loft conversion would be the best insulated room of your home.

Being able to keep a loft cool in summer and warm in winter requires a few structural adjustments. These will be carried out during your loft conversion work.  As well as saving on energy bills, a temperature regulated loft also reduces environmental impact and makes your new loft space more enjoyable.

PRACTICAL STEPS AND SOLUTIONS

How To Overcome the elements

Insulate Effectively:  Insulation not only prevents warm air escaping through the roof – it also keeps the hot air out in summer.  Charles Grosvenor insulate both roof and the walls, creating a thermal barrier that will significantly reduce temperature swings. Roofing membranes and the correct loft floor boarding also help to insulate the loft space.

Roof Window or Roof Lights: When planning your loft conversion, we try to include as many windows as we can. Not only does this increase your ventilation levels – it will massively increase your natural light.

Installing high quality VELUX windows can also make a huge difference to your energy bills.  Double or triple glazing units allow you to control airflow and sunlight while improving thermal performance year-round.

Blackout or Thermal Blinds: Loft conversions are great for letting in natural light but, as with a conservatory, that can make your new space unbearably hot or cold.  Roof window blinds help to block excess heat in the summer and retain warmth during the winter months. Thermal blinds or black out blinds are also a great choice.

Roof Tiles: The materials used on your roof can also make a significant difference. For instance, lighter colours such as terracotta will reflect rather than absorb the sun’s heat.
