Where Should The Staircase Go In a loft conversion?

Deciding on the placement of a staircase in a loft conversion is a crucial element of the design process. The staircase not only provides access, but also influences the overall aesthetic and functionality of the converted space.

Here are some key considerations to help you determine the best location for your staircase. Remember – as well as being aesthetically pleasing, your new bespoke staircase is required to be compliant of the Building Regulations 2010 (Approved Document K, 2013 edition).

ACCESSIBILITY Considerations

Planning the placement of your staircase

Space Efficiency: One of the primary factors to consider is the efficient use of space. The staircase should be positioned in a way that maximises the usable area both in the loft and on the floor below. Look for a location that minimises the loss of square footage, such as above existing staircases or in unused corners.

Access and Flow: Ensure that the staircase provides easy access to the loft without disrupting the flow of your home. Consider the most logical path from the main living areas to the loft. The staircase should feel like a natural extension of your existing house layout.

Headroom and Ceiling Height: Adequate headroom is essential to avoid discomfort or safety hazards. The ideal location should allow for sufficient ceiling height both at the entry point and along the entire staircase.  Structural changes may be needed to accommodate this.

Aesthetic Appeal: The staircase should complement the interior design of your home. Consider materials, colours, and style to ensure it blends seamlessly. A well-designed staircase can become a striking architectural feature.

Natural Light: Positioning the staircase near sources of natural light, such as windows or VELUX roof windows, can enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the space. Natural light can make your loft conversion feel more open and inviting.

Straight Above Existing Stairs:
Placing the loft staircase directly above the existing staircase is a popular and space-saving option. This configuration uses the same vertical space, reducing the overall impact on the floor plan.

Design Advice for your loft conversion

Attic Conversion Staircase Ideas: One of the benefits of an attic conversion is the utilisation of a dusty old waste of space. You may be dreaming of an airy new hobby room in your newly converted loft, but have you given much thought to how you will get up to your new loft space?

The staircase is not only important for practical reasons, it can also be a design feature in itself. Ideally the new staircase will be built directly above the existing staircase for continuity purposes.

Your new bespoke staircase will always be subject to Building Regulation Document K. It must be a least 2 metres above head height and 2 metres below the existing staircase to maintain headroom whilst walking up the stairs.

If it is situated underneath a sloping roof, the the head height should be no less than 1.9 metres at the centre and 1.8 metres at the edges.

The risers (the vertical part of the staircase) should be a minimum of 150mm or a maximum of 220mm.

If the space is tight, a winder staircase is recommended. Not only do they look great, they can limit wasted landing space.
